Brief history of La Tour d'Aigues

The village of La Tour d'Aigues is situated in the Aigues region in the southern Luberon.

This delightful destination has many charms, not least the grand Renaissance-style  château which rises spectacularly above the village in the Provençal sunlight.

The property, which overlooks the Eze plain, has a long and fascinating history:

• The name “Turris” first appears in the annals between 1002 and 1018. It belonged at the time to a certain Béranger.
• In the 13th century, it was owned by the Sabran family – one of the most powerful in the Languedoc and Rhône Valley regions.
• At the beginning of the 15th century, it fell into the possession of the Lords of Agoult.
• In the 16th century, it was taken over by the Baron of Bolliers, who transformed the ruins of the original 11th century castle into a Renaissance-style château whose magnificence was unrivalled in the region.

The narrow streets of the centre are lined with fine 17th and 18th century mansions and town houses, a former mediaeval priory, several fountains and a church rich in historic significance.

Agriculture has always played an important part in the region, based mainly around fruit and vegetables, vineyards and AOC “Côtes du Luberon” wines.
